Its about walking and talking at the same time

March 5, 2008 by mimecine

shamshuipo.jpglankwaifong.jpgpacificplace.jpghknightview.jpgHong Kong is about walking and talking and doing 100’s of things at the same time. About 50% of the centers of Hong Kong Island and the Kowloon Peninsula (the “city” areas of Hong Kong) are pure madness the other 50% are western style, very upscale shopping malls. As a visitor both are equally interesting, as they represent two very different but equally important sides of Hong Kong. Here are some images from Sham Shu Po (Kowloon, one of the earliest developed districts and now considered by the government as a center of urban decay in need of “renewal” although we loved it there and could go again and again), Lan Kwai Fong (Hong Kong Island, ex-pat area, becoming primarily touristic but still has some interesting buildings and aspects ) Pacific Place Mall (in the center of Hong Kong Island, good for a bathroom pit-stop at least, not good to go to more than once ) and for good measure the view of Hong Kong Island at night from Kowloon, a great brain rinser at the end of the day, along with a late night ride on the Star Ferry. Sorry the images are out of order, hope to change that but for now please read the labels!

craving certain foods from Hong Kong

March 1, 2008 by mimecine

export.jpgtofu.jpgnoodleman.jpgfrenchtoast1.jpgHere I am sitting dreaming of certain things we ate in Hong Kong while I pour over dim sum possibilities for tomorrow. I thought one of the best things I could do right now to get the fantasy of eating in Hong Kong out of my system would be to show others some of the delicious food moments we had on the trip. I know close to nothing about Cantonese food so I am sure my terminology is totally wrong but hopefully you can get the jist of things. Congee, fried sesame balls, hot tofu in a bowl with sugar syrup/ water poured over, fresh tofu, Hong Kong style french toast, fresh soy milk, fresh shrimp and egg noodles, fried fish with a curry sauce from a street cafe, etc etc. OH: MILK TEA Hong Kong Style

Ladies with carts in Hong Kong

by mimecine

ladies-in-hk.jpgWe are now getting ready to put Hong Kong in the shop! It was a great trip. Hong Kong is both a wonderful and tragic glimpse into the future, both completely inspiring and terrifying and loud and urgent and malls and population density and pollution and really wonderful, wonderful people. These two ladies sum it up with their carts, trade and action all over the place and all the goodies that come with it! It is all very fast and snappy, it was a real treat. Hong Kong arrives to the store on March 13th!

Dullsville! Yeah, Dullsville!

December 14, 2007 by mimecine

Dullsville 2007The resource of resources – Where Inspiration goes to get inspired. That’s Dullsville. These fabulous folks had a shop on 13th Street on Manhattan just off of 3rd Avenue which closed down when they got sick of the city, but they return for the holidays! This year, from the 8th (we haven’t had time to go ourselves yet) until the 31st they reside one flight up — just like us — above their former space, they will await you between noon to 6pm and sell you the most fabulous things: (From their own flyer) Vintage ornaments, lighting, curios, artwork and unusual gifts. And that is exactly what they have. If we had to write a New York cityguide and the editor only allowed us one paragraph, we would recommend Dullsville. Heck, if we only got a seven-letter word all-in-all it would be “Dullsvi”.

You. Must. Go. Yes. It. Is. That. Good.

If you ever saw our red-light-district-like parrot-lamp in the corner of our store, now you know where we got it. Are you having a “Julgran” (X-Mas tree for you non-swedish)? It is at Dullsville you find your ornaments.

But you may only go if you behave. These are the nicest of nice.

Dullsville:
Upstairs at 143 E 13th St. Ny Ny

Phones: 917 701-1660 and 814 259-3550 (remeber! bevhave)
