Tonight: We are landing in Portugal!

November 5, 2009 by mimecine

Oh, gettin’ ready. Only three more images to fix up – maybe we won’t. A few more texts to write, the beer is being delivered in 15m. Come by. 7-10!

Update: We are Update-ed. And I never got to fix those images and texts. But soon, maybe tomorrow. Tit for tat, time for tunes.

Update 2: I broke the site, but I won’t do anything until I have another beer. I mean, why did I do that?

Update 3: I unbroke it, thank god(s). Just by typing a link character by character. I don’t know how, but now I think things work properly…..

KIOSK: Portugal

November 2, 2009 by mimecine

Portugal!
We have a new love interest and it is called PORTUGAL.  Three weeks visiting turned into six, one visit into two. Impressions all around. The collection got huge, huger and hugest. To be honest we are not quite sure what happened  during the time we were away, facing the sea and sitting on the EDGE OF THE WORLD.  Looking out we realized that the certain amount of isolation Portugal has always enjoyed allows it to truly be it’s own beautiful self.  OPENING PARTY THURSDAY NOVEMBER 5TH from 7 – 10 at our place: 95 SPRING STREET, 2ND FLOOR. Hope you can make it by to say HI, have a beer and take a look.

P.S. If you can’t come by, ONLINE will be updated on Thursday.

updated stockholm tips / good eats

by mimecine

Eating out in Stockholm can be expensive. Here are our suggestions. I eat Swedish food when I am in Sweden and I mainly I like to go to traditional places.

En Flicka på Gaffeln
Not traditional, but very Swedish in a way…we had a party there in September, food GREAT, atmosphere GREAT, can’t wait to go back, for sure go!
Dinner
Frejgatan 79
tel: 320525
www.enflickapagaffeln.se

Pelikan
Swedish food, traditional, old beer hall, not always the best food but a great atmosphere, I really like it
Dinner
Blekingegatan 40
tel: 55609090
www.pelikan.se

Tranan
Swedish food, traditional, the ruined the upstairs decor with an update, eating in the bar downstairs is the way to go!
Dinner
Karlbergsvägen 14
tel: 52728100
www.tranan.se

Den Gyldene Freden
Swedish food, very traditional in food and interior in a good way, open since 1722, I had not gone for 13 years of visiting Stockholm until this summer, glad I did!
Lunch is the way to go, not as stuffy
Österlånggatan 51
tel: 249760
www.gyldenefreden.se

Tennstopet
Swedish food, traditional, explore the place while you are there, interesting decor…nice to go for drinks only too
Dinner or for a beer at the bar
Dalagatan 50
tel: 325321
www.tennstopet.se

KB or Konstnärsbaren

Swedish food, a bit updated at times in a good way, traditionally known as an “artists” place, nowdays too expensive for such but good if someone else is paying
Dinner
Smålandsgatan 7
tel: 6796032

I could go on, there are more but I have not eaten at them yet! Hope this helps!

Updated stockholm tips / Cheap Eats

by mimecine

hi

Another friend is going to Stockholm- I wish I was there to host! – but instead I offer these updated tips to him and anyone else reading this post. I hope the weather is good, it can be iffy at this time of year. My suggestion is visit from April 15 – Sept 15 and you have a fairly safe bet. First I put the cheap eats here and then I go onto the more pricey venues…

Center:

Sosta:
for coffee and sandwich, daytime only
84 sveavagen between the center and odenplan- you will see others around town
Tel: 6121349

Mellqvist:
for a coffee and sandwich, open 7 am – 7 pm most days
Rörstrandsgatan 4
Tel: 302380

Steam
dumplings dumplings asian, yummy, only open at lunch, go there if you go to visit the gallery part of town, if you look at the map you will see what I mean!
Sankt Eriksgatan 118
tel: 50089949

Vete-katten:
center near hotorget
cafe for lunch, swedish traditional for a shrimp sandwich and coffee / cake
Kungsgatan 55
Tel: 208405

Kajsas:
fish restaurant in the center for lunch only!
located in Hötorgshallen, the indoor market on Hötorget square
Tel: 207262

Ki-Mama:
It might seem odd to go to Stockholm for Japanese food but the fish is really good in Sweden…
Observatoriegatan 13
Tel: 333482

Valand Café & Konditori
A magical cafe done in 1954 by a husband and wife team that has not changed since. Everything is baked on site and the interior is truly inspirational. I go there for a sweet pick me up and a strong Swedish coffee. Everything is still done by the team. Not fancy, bring something to read if you are alone
Surbrunnsgatan 48
Tel: 300476

SODERMALM: (south part of the city)

Outdoor Herring stand:
outdoor on slussen square, sodermalm, daytime only
it is a little truck type thing with a fish on top
for fried herring Swedish style, served a bunch of different ways
I think the best herring in town

Fyra knop:
a creperie for dinner on sodermalm

Veggies from the stockholm farmers market in September

Veggies from the stockholm farmers market in September

Cafe Giffi
A Swedish diner, I can’t say more besides go there, admire the sign, have a liver paste sandwich and / or oatmeal in the morning with some coffee and roll with it. Not as good since smoking was banned but AHHHH, Mellqvist second location is across the street and towards the center if you need a posh coffee after.

An Artisan Chocolate factory in Brooklyn

October 30, 2009 by yuki

mastbrothersHi, my name is Yuki, I have been a member of team KIOSK since they opened.  I am very passionate about food and have published a guide book of international restaurants in NYC which is on sale at KIOSK. I will be posting as many tasty notes on the blog as i can. Please check it out! Also if you want to sneak peek my kitchen, please stop by my food diary www.365dishes.blogspot.com

I would like to write about an amazing chocolate factory in Wiiliamsburg. Mast brothers handcraft their chocolate from cacao beans to the bar in their own factory and they are the only factory in NY to complete all this process themselves. Their chocolate is pretty dark&rich,  has such a deep flavor of the nib. But the finishing is so clean and leaves a delicate cacao flavor aftertaste. ummmmmm, so good!! The factory is open to public on  weekend so you can buy their chocolate also if you are lucky, you can take a peek at their production!

The little Piano that is no more

October 16, 2009 by mimecine

360ab759d291c307b8832db85c620861

Goodbye little piano, we hate to say goodbye… The little piano is no more for us at KIOSK as the manufacturer is sold out of our model until March of 2010. Why? Because according to an employee of Schoenhut for the first time Target, JC Penny, Coles, etc have added it into their selection? Why? Because according to the employee KIOSK got some nice press and attention for the model and since we are considered to be a “trendsetter” in the industry this is likely the reason the Big Brothers added it in. It’s nice getting screwed by someone you support, kind of like helping a partner through University and when they get tenure they leave you for an 18 year old student. I want all of our makers and suppliers to do well and better and better but they should also care about the interests of the little guys who helped them. Why not think of us at the same time you are filling the big guys orders? Marco says it’s “just business” I guess I want something more… Now if JC Penny can’t sell the model we had such good luck with they will dump the product on deep discount and never stock it again, we won’t either. It is a lose / lose for all. Short-sighted and boring. A real lame-ass move. “Oh, but there are plenty of other great models to choose from.” Adios Amigo

American Architecture Today?

October 12, 2009 by mimecine

Picture 1

Developers and developed land, I always wonder who the hell is building such ugly and crappy things here. You can even live in your own “ECO” version now, and there are certified “ECOBrokers” for 8,000 square foot ECO Palaces! So energy efficient too! America is Wacko. To follow is a conversation I had with a “ECOBroker” after I got her solicitation, I guess she does not realize we live in a 250 sq foot ECO palace in the West Village…(removed her infos of course…)

Good morning,
What are you doing, up at 3.03 am?

yes, it is great, you can be secluded in your own personal eco delight! with your private beach that no one else can touch or have access to, so giving!
I mean really, is 8,000 sq feet and 7 (polluting and non-eco I assume) fireplaces really too much for the one sad individual or family who will live there, I guess they will have the lights all turned off in the one side of their palace when the use the yoga room at night, chanting OM’s and working hard to balance themselves

I have to say, I don’t mind wealth but I can’t buy this, it’s too ridiculous

I like your reaction!

Yes, it is a “big “ house, but….it is well insulated with synthetic insulated panels, it has geothermal heating/cooling systems, the electricity comes from the solar photovoltaic panels that are on the roof, the pool does not use chemicals and has solar cover, lots of materials are sustainable….it is luxury going to the right direction. First steps for the Hamptons, no?
