More Stockholm things

September 5, 2007 by mimecine

hi
some more things from Stockholm I am remembering:

A lovely, little, old flower shop where the man is as uplifting as the flowers. Open on Sundays too from 10 – 15.00! Good to know if you are going to visit family. We got one amazing peach gladiolus there and people were mesmerized by it when I was walking home.

HH Cardulain Blommor
Sveavagen 102
tel: 6737348
–odenplan–

A magical cafe done in 1954 by a husband and wife team that has not changed since. Everything is baked on site and the interior is truly inspirational. I go there for a sweet pick me up and a strong Swedish coffee. Everything is still done by the team.

Valand Café & Konditori
Surbrunnsgatan 48
tel: 300476
–odenplan–

A shop filled with vintage things, from lamps to my favorite: old printed matter. A real candy store of goodies. Even better, located just up the street from Valand!

More New York food

August 31, 2007 by mimecine

After the last post I thought of three more places in New York to eat:

Our favorite falafel, Marco swears by it, I like the pies and the sweets…

Rainbow Falafel & Shawarma
26 E 17th St
New York 10003
tel: 1 212-691-8641
–union square–

And for Thai food, the guy who lived in our apartment before us is Thai and he brought us here saying it was one of his favorites in the city, no wonder, it is really good. The whole fish is super yummy and they also make these shrimp cakes I crave.

Pongsri
165 W 23rd St
New York 10011
tel: 1 212-645-8808
–chelsea–

Last, but not at all least, the best bagels in my humble opinion, although the one in the lower east side is good I stick with old faithful:

H & H Bagels

New York places to eat

by mimecine

so now Klaus from Helsinki (www.fiaskodesign.com) is going to New York and we promised him some suggestions to keep him busy…

Again, first things first, places to eat, none of these places are overly pricey:

We have already mentioned B & H dairy here on the blog but since it is our FAVORITE and everyone should go there I mention it again, the best french toast, fresh juice, old school, radio playing, tiny space, got to support and say hello from us, although they have no idea who we are:

B & H Dairy
127 2nd Avenue
New York, NY 10003
tel: 1 212-505-8065
–east village–

For Italian, although it can be a wait except at lunch which can be nice with a glass of wine, we really like good-olde:

Bar Pitti
268 Sixth Ave.
New York, NY 10014
tel: 1 212-982-3300
–west village–

For an American seafood experience, although more on the pricey side, always a wait and consistently good:

Pearl Oyster Bar
18 Cornelia Street
New York. NY 10014
212.691.8211
Lunch Mon-Fri: 12pm – 2:30pm
Dinner Mon-Sat: 6pm-11pm
–west village–

Speaking of oysters, we don’t like the food except for the creamed spinach and oysters but it is a great place to duck into for 6 extravagant oysters and a wine, and then to be hungry the rest of the night because you blew your allowance on 6 oysters and a wine

Grand Central Oyster Bar
Grand Central Station
tel: 212.490.6650
–mid-town–

For breakfast, Egg in Williamsburg is the TOPS! I LOVE the biscuit with a scramble on it and roasted tomato plus their coffee rocks, yum, I am heading over there now…damn, get me a southern breakfast any day

Egg
135 N. 5th St.
Brooklyn, NY 11211
tel: 718-302-5151
–williamsburg–

For the perfect Japanese meal, can we say anything more? OMEN… you can go cheap here with the “Omen” soup and some rice or all out with the seasonal menu, one of my favorite things it to go here late night on my own and have a small dish, a vodka soda with lemon and listen to the grandfather clock ticking, very poetic, almost a precursor to a suicide… but really, I have had some of my best meals there

Omen
113 Thompson St
New York, NY 10012
tel: 212-925-8923
–SOHO–

Pizza, this is it, hop in and grab it by the slice at the bar, hot out of the oven, amazing

L’Asso
41 Kenmare St
New York, NY 10012
tel: 212-219-2353
–Nolita–

For the other prefect Japanese meal, some soba, my favorite is the eel tempura with hot soba, super duper get me some

Soba-Koh
309 E 5th St
New York, NY 10003
(212) 254-2244
–east village–

There is a Finnish diner

August 26, 2007 by mimecine

finnish-diner.jpgOk, we did not know it existed but so far we have been introduced to two: the Finnish diner. One of the best things when traveling is being invited into someones home and trying homemade food…not the ready-made stuff you can buy in the markets or at the grocery stores but the normal things which are written about and we all long for when in a new country. I particularly wanted to try a karelian pastry with chopped egg and butter on top, in the bakeries and markets they come without the egg, luckily for us we found a Finnish diner that had a really good version.

Strawberries and berries in Finland

August 24, 2007 by mimecine

berries.JPG Finnish strawberries, Finnish blueberries, you name it berries, they are all good, better than anywhere else…as is with most things in Finland, they are concentrated! Full of flavor! Eat them fresh from the market or dried, YUM! In a powdered form or in soup, better yet, they are CHEAP a whole 2 pints of red currents for $3, finally something affordable in Finland! Whohooo! Please note the metal cup in the photo used for measuring out a liter or a half liter, I was surprised to see such a system in place here rather than selling by weight. We are working hard on getting some of these handmade cups for KIOSK, they have the Finnish authorities official mark on them and are lovely. The elderly gentleman who makes them does not speak English so this is a SLOW process.

Helsinki is great, part 1

August 18, 2007 by mimecine

Esplanati 1 Esplanati 2 Esplanati 3 p1040375.JPGHelsinki dispatch 1….people are wonderful, city is beautiful, so much to see and do, so much condensed in a small area! we are really enjoying it, walking everywhere which makes a big difference, so come here in the spring or summer months, you want to walk around. GREAT food, again and again, not only expensive stuff, but well priced, Finnish food, we will be posting our resources when we get back, especially for the Finnish diner we found yesterday. One thing I was really impressed with is the Esplanade Park that cuts strait through the heart of the downtown area. It is a fairly small strip of nature including: lovely trees, flowers, KIOSKI’s which are these amazing little structures with their own personalities (and people personalities inside too) to buy drinks and snacks from, statues and benches and people people people, it seems that 80% of the city was hanging out on this strip of grass, flowers and trees, a condensed wonderland of everything you want right in the middle of it all, I was really impressed, cars on both sides but in typical Scandinavian fashion everyone was well behaved and it was all so quiet with lots of people watching and action to enjoy. So what if it is in the center of all the tourist action! Leave your snobbiness at home, here in Helsinki we have not yet felt a “cool” area, since it is all pretty cool from top to bottom and we have really walked it all.
