Provence is nice, mostly tempoless. Food is great. Life is good etc. Bug us to make a map of places to go to, although I’ll *never* give up our secret swimming spot — it’s a bit dangerous and if too many of us came there to swim the local Gendarmes would march in and scream nasty things to the bathers before going to the cafe for the afternoon pastis. Yea, they’re really bad guys.

Full of flavor! Eat them fresh from the market or dried, YUM! In a powdered form or in soup, better yet, they are CHEAP a whole 2 pints of red currents for $3, finally something affordable in Finland! Whohooo! Please note the metal cup in the photo used for measuring out a liter or a half liter, I was surprised to see such a system in place here rather than selling by weight. We are working hard on getting some of these handmade cups for KIOSK, they have the Finnish authorities official mark on them and are lovely. The elderly gentleman who makes them does not speak English so this is a SLOW process.

GREAT food, again and again, not only expensive stuff, but well priced, Finnish food, we will be posting our resources when we get back, especially for the Finnish diner we found yesterday. One thing I was really impressed with is the Esplanade Park that cuts strait through the heart of the downtown area. It is a fairly small strip of nature including: lovely trees, flowers, KIOSKI’s which are these amazing little structures with their own personalities (and people personalities inside too) to buy drinks and snacks from, statues and benches and people people people, it seems that 80% of the city was hanging out on this strip of grass, flowers and trees, a condensed wonderland of everything you want right in the middle of it all, I was really impressed, cars on both sides but in typical Scandinavian fashion everyone was well behaved and it was all so quiet with lots of people watching and action to enjoy. So what if it is in the center of all the tourist action! Leave your snobbiness at home, here in Helsinki we have not yet felt a “cool” area, since it is all pretty cool from top to bottom and we have really walked it all.

Been in Helsinki for two fabulous days now going to great stores and watching finns having a great late summer days. Did you know that finnish is completely uncomprehensible, but really beutiful as a language? Whenever they speak to me, I pretend I just didn’t hear them so that they will repeat themselves to me. After letting those spritzy sounds sink in, I sheepishly admit I only speak english. That is not nice of me at all, but I can’t help it. When people don’t hear me, I utter some mock-finnish just because I like it — I like the sounds as much as I like the place. I am hosting a crush on Helsinki in summerdress… /Marco
