I quick scan through Moby Dick will result in handfuls of port-cities being mentioned which is such a treat when you know the area.

You MUST go to Revere, MA and head over to the NECCO factory.

The Sparrow House in Plymouth is a lovely jewelry store set in an historical home.

I would definitely also consider trying to track down a ship builder who still is making them by hand– i don’t know any right off the top of my head, but they’re still out there.

You probably won’t see this, but if you are going there, head to Oak Bluffs to see the gingerbread cottages and the Flying Horses carousel but mostly pay attention to West Tisbury and all points “up-island” as they say. Local products? Amazing knitted things, wampum jewelery, scrimshaw, Portuguese sweet bread, and rosehip jam are what I remember from my childhood there… I haven’t been back in years, but I am sure you’d find lots of resourceful people making neat things. Have a corn muffin at the Black Dog Bakery for me.

We chatted briefly on Sat night during the Rich Brilliant Willing reception.

I recommend the Westport Rivers winery, , owned by a great family who loves to make great wine.

Since we’re on the topic of booze, one of the best things about New England (at least one that could be taken back to kiosk) is hard apple cider. Another artisinally-produced product from the folks at West County Cider, , they bottle by type of apple. Very tasty!

A busy couple of days since I came back from NY but more as I think of things in MA.
